Groups & Brackets - Tournament Definition Builder

"TD Builder" makes it easy to build "Tournament Definitions" (TD). Uploading a TD to a G&B tournament page updates the divisions, teams, schedule, field names, and colors. The TD can be also be used directly by importing the schedule and team IDs contained in the TD into a spreadsheet.

TD Builder Overview

Try out the TD Builder here: Start Demo

Users without 'Director' access usually can't import TDs, but the "build" demo pages have been configured to let anyone do it. Click on the Start link, complete all the steps, then click "Use Tourn. Def.".

If you are a 'Director', go to your tournament page, click on 'Admin.', and log in. Click on 'Generate TD...' to start the TD Build.

2017 TD (Tournament Definition) Builder Videos (

There are already several videos showing how TD Builder can be used to set up tournaments quickly, but some of the software has changed since those were made, and I wanted to demonstrate how to build a two division, Boys and Girls, tournament, with two groups of 4 teams in each division. I ended up making several similar videos and keeping three of them. All three show the same tournament. The resulting tournaments are not identical but they are equivalent. The same matches are played though the time and field may differ from one demo to another.

2x2x4 Tournament Build in 5 minutes (16:17) - This is probably the best of the three. It explains the process fairly well and isn't too long. It starts with 2:36 of introduction, followed by a 5 minute tournament build (ending at 7:40), with commentary. This is followed by about 3 minutes of information about the Tournament Definition that was just built. The TD is loaded into the website at 10:43. The new tournament page is described at 11:22. Regrouping of the Girls division is shown starting at 12:15. The revised tournament, with different teams in the Girls groups, is ready at 14:40.

Tournament Review (View) is demonstrated at 15:00.

TD Builder Demo and Review - 2 x 2 x 4 (17:48) - This tutorial is very similar to the "2x2x4 Tournament Build in 5 minutes" video. If you're only going to watch one, watch that one. However, this does have a some information that is not included in the that video and may be worth watching if you're really curious. It does show how Tournament Review can flag 4 games in one day.

2x2x4 TD Build in 3:35 (4:58) - This is not so much a tutorial as it is a experiment. I wanted to see how fast I could build the 2x2x4 tournament. Obviously I had the tournament information ready for cut and paste, and I knew exactly what to do without thinking about it too much; the Tournament Definition was created in 2:59 ( 0:53-3:52 on the video ), with the tournament up and running in a little over 3:30 (at 4:08).

These are tournaments that were built using TD Builder. It used older software (2014) so there will be differences in the details. Each demo includes the results of the build, a video of the build, and a guided tour of the steps.

Two Division, 8 Team Tournament

Build 11 is based on a 2014 G&B tournament, the River City Shootout with 8 varsity girls teams split into two divisions. The Champions were based on points. I started with the division names and colors, the names of the teams in each divisions, and the date and times that the fields were available. Entering this information into TD Builder took under 4 minutes, though I did have it saved as text so that I could just paste it into the build. A 100% functional tournament web page was up in 4:43. I did not try to end up with exactly the same match ups at the same times as the original tournament, but relied on the Tournament Builder to set up group games in which each team plays each other team in the group.

Two 4 Team Groups with Semi-Finals and Finals

Build 12 uses two 4 team groups, A and B. The A Winner plays B Runner-Up in one semifinal and the B Winner meets the second place A team in the other, with the semifinal winners meeting in the Final. This took a little less than 8 minutes to build in the video but the build process is described in more detail. I was able to build it in under 3 minutes without trying to describe the process. The video also touches on how one would use the TD Builder to generate an schedule for external use. The "Generate TD" options include a "Name" option.

Two Division, 15 Team, 21 Game Tournament

Build 13 includes a 9 team JV Boys division and a 6 team JV Girls division. The 9 team division has 9 group games, semifinals and a final while the 6 team division is comprised of 6 group games, a final, a third place game and one consolation game. Three fields were scheduled over two days.
I was able to build it in under 9 minutes though it's easy to do it faster.

Two Division, Boys and Girls, 24 Team, 24 Game Not-a-Tournament

Build 14 is based on the 2014 GA AL Border Battle sponsored by Auburn High School Boys and Girls Soccer. It is not a tournament because no standings are kept. Each Georgia team plays two Alabama teams and vice versa. The TD Build gets into a lot more details of the Matches page than previous demos because the of the different structure. Two methods are used to set up the matches, contributing to the relatively long 15 minute build time. Field assignments are also changed in this build.

A 0-point system is used, in contrast to the more common 10-point or 3-point systems, so no group rankings are shown.
